Terra Incognita Media

Terra Incognita Media is an ecofeminist response to the outdoor industry. We want to be a quarterly print publication, but right now we are only online. We are throwing a fundraiser on February 2 and trying to gain traction, supporters, and sponsors.

Location: Portland, Oregon

Organization mission statement: Terra Incognita Media is a feminist response to environmental and social injustice, as well as a protest of our click-bait, 140-character culture. Much like our approach to climbing, we strive to challenge the limits and perceptions of what we can endure, handle, and create. Consumerism and capitalism dominate our Western ethos, but this is our resistance. As our society shifts into a fully integrated digital age, and (without our welcome) ushers in a new president, we strive to instigate meaningful discourse that leads off the page and manifests in political action.

We tell different stories. We seek to make the unheard and marginalized loud and clear. We uphold creativity, expertise, and craft. We know the costs and risks associated with running a print publication, but feminist media doesn't exist in the outdoor industry. And that needs to change.

Project description: Terra Incognita Media is an ecofeminist response to the outdoor industry. We want to be a quarterly print publication, but right now we are only online. We are throwing a fundraiser on February 2 and trying to gain traction, supporters, and sponsors. Our goal is to bring awareness to ecofeminism: the oppression of nature parallels the oppression faced by marginalized groups. We support writers, artists, and designers who are working hard to publish an alternative lens to the outdoor community. Increasingly the media falls prey to the pressures of "likes" and short attention spans, but we are protesting. We provide our community with thoughtful, critical, and important analysis of what's going on in our outdoor community, what's happening with the politics of the industry, and draw parallels to the larger world. There are few publications out there who strive to publish quality over quantity, who value their convictions over their google analytics, while at the same time providing unabashed, unapologetic feminist media.

Project needs: brand, marketing, and / or digital strategy, brand messaging / voice, user interface design, website design, website development, staff portraits, event photography, brochure(s), business cards, postcards, billboards, marketing strategy, advertising campaign, promotional video, documentary/storytelling video, digital newsletter design, social media branding, search engine optimization

Other project needs not listed above: Fundraising for print. Become a non-profit. Grants. Sponsors. Email/email list set-up. Weekly email blast.

Project Timeline: ASAP

How will this creative work help you overcome challenges or meet specific goals?: With this help I will be able to focus on the content and managing content contributors. This has gone on the backburner since I am the founder, the marketer, the event planner, and social media manager. With this help we will be able to spread awareness, gain traction, and grow followers, which is the crux of our situation. If no one knows about us, how can we move forward and raise more money to get off the ground? We believe that many people in the outdoor world want and need a feminist publication, but they just haven't heard about us yet. When we talk to people often their face lights up and is incredibly excited to hear "feminism" and "outdoor industry" in one sentence. It's unheard of, yet much needed. We need a lot of marketing help, which will free up my time for writing/content strategy/content management/networking.
